Is there anywhere I can find more information about help for homes who have oil instead of gas? E.g. smart meters (would the smart meter only read the electricity) ?

  • Hi Louise,

Sometimes Rural Community Councils run oil co-operative buying schemes where a number of householders club together to buy oil from a supplier who provides a better deal in return for the economies of scale achieved by delivering to several houses in the same area. You might also want to check the existing oil clubs:

Smart meters work with gas and/or electricity. A wide range of FAQs avout smart meters are available on Smart Energy GB's website:

    • Thanks for that

  • Hi Louise

Here in Devon there are little oil collectives in most villages, where a group of residents come together to bulk purchase their oil and get a good price. We also have the Devon Oil Collective which is managed by Devon Communities Together. It would be good to try and find out if there are any oil collectives in your area that people can join. I am also finding it important to remind people that they can also shop around for LPG and bottled gas rather than sticking with the same old brand, as they might save money. I guess smart meters will not be available for gas and oil stores as the household is in control of how much and when they purchase it and they have their own ways of checking their fuel levels - but I might be wrong.

    All the best

    • Good idea - thank you
