Case studies

Dear all,

We are fast approaching the end of the 2016/17 project period. We have so far received very few case studies. Could you please send these to me at anahit.aharonyan@nea.org.uk copying besn@decc.gsi.gov.uk as soon as you can?

We are also very much interested to shadow your events/activities/advice outreach sessions or training events to see the good work you are doing on the ground.

Can you please send me the details of the events planned in the next few weeks that you would be happy for us to come along to?

Many thanks

Anahit

Interim Report

Hello,

Thank you for submitting the Interim report.

Some of you have reported financial savings from switching when no consumers switched on the day. When reporting Annual estimated cost saved by switching, we ask you to report the actual figure saved from switching rather than the potential savings figure. As such, please only include the figure in the aggregated sum for Annual estimated cost saved by switching if the consumer actually switched on the day: you will notice that it is explained on the one-to-one advice record sheet that where consumers did not switch on the day, then that box should not be completed and the figure not reported.

BESN project is all about helping vulnerable consumers reduce their energy costs through assisted action on tariffs, switching and take up of energy efficiency offers, so we would ask champions to spend time with vulnerable consumers to uncover these options during one-to-ones and record these outcomes on the consumer one-to-one sheet which is available under the Resources section.

Thanks

Anahit

Warm Home Discount Schemes

Hello,

I have been advised that both the E.On and the Ovo Warm Home Discount Broader Group schemes have now closed for 2016/17.

The E.On page is saying that you can still register people for next year, but not for but 2016/17 - https://www.eonenergy.com/for-your-home/saving-energy/need-little-extra-help/warm-home-discount

The Ovo page is saying that they are accepting applications, but when you click on the link to make the application, you get a message saying the scheme is closed. https://www.ovoenergy.com/ovo-answers/topics/payments-and-statements/payments/what-is-the-warm-home-discount.html

I hope this is helpful - keep me posted if you hear of anymore schemes closing so we can keep everyone up to date.

Thank you!

Helen

Smart Energy GB in Communities

Hello,

When we have been looking through the reports you have been submitted for delivery in September and October, we can see that you are doing a lot of work around smart meters and helping vulnerable households about the the choices involved with installing a smart meter.  We therefore thought it might be helpful for you to have a bit more information about National Energy Action's (NEA) work that might help you support your community with advice about smart meters.

Smart Energy GB in Communities, which is being delivered by a consortium of charities led by national fuel poverty charity NEA, is part of Smart Energy GB’s consumer engagement campaign helping to inform and inspire people about smart meters and the positive changes they can bring.  Through Smart Energy GB in Communities NEA is partnering with regional and local organisations from the voluntary, private and public sectors, to engage hard to reach individuals and help them understand how they can benefit from smart meters.  The focus for 2016 is on partners who work with the following priority groups:

  • District heating customers
  • Lack of proficiency in English or Welsh
  • Lacking basic digital skills
  • Learning disability
  • Low literacy
  • Memory impairment
  • No personal internet access
  • Off-gas grid customers
  • Prepay customers
  • Private tenants
  • Severe or profound deafness
  • Social housing tenants

If you work with any of these groups and would like to find out more about becoming a partner in the campaign or receiving a FREE staff briefing on the smart meter roll-out, please contact communities@nea.org.uk. NEA can also provide information about potential grants, training and resources to support your organisation’s engagement with the campaign.

There is more information in the attached flyer: Smart Energy GB in Communities

Project Completion and Final Reporting Process

All delivery activity for the Big Energy Saving Network must be completed by 21st March 2016 and there are a number of key dates and processes you need to be aware of.

The February Monthly Report due on 3rd March will not open until 9am on 18th February 2016. A further bulletin will be sent closer to the time.

The Final Report will be made available one month before it is due. It will include questions similar to those found in the monthly report with additional questions to help us establish the effectiveness of the programme.

The Assurance Report can be found in Annex 3 of your Grant Offer Letter.

Only one case study is required for the BESN programme. There is a case study template for consumers and frontline workers which can be found on the website.

Once DECC has reviewed your final report we will email you directly to confirm the cumulative figures you have achieved over the year for Front Line Workers and Consumers. We intend to complete this by 1st April 2016. If there are any discrepancies please make us aware immediately.

If you have any questions regarding this please contact us at besn@decc.gsi.gov.uk

Consumer Evaluation Consent Forms

The BESN team are always looking to help improve the service we provide both to participating organisations and the consumers you help. It is essential to the future of the programme that we have the evidence to show that it is in fact delivering for consumers. As part of the reporting and monitoring process we therefore look to identify examples of best practice as well as potential indicators of where things might not be going so well. To date BMG Research has received a limited number of forms providing consumer’s consent to be contacted.

We would ask that all champions make a concerted effort from now until the end of the programme to try and send in consumer consent forms wherever possible. BMG will be completing their research in the first week of March, so during February we will be asking you to submit these forms on a weekly basis, on the 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th.

At the training events run by NEA in the autumn some organisations put forward potential issues some consumers could have to providing their consent. One issue raised frequently was where consumer’s first language wasn’t English - BMG Research is able to undertake the research in different languages if required by consumers, so please make any language requirements clear on the consent form, and advise consumers that this is available.

We appreciate there are circumstances where it is not appropriate for consumers to be contacted, particularly where mental health, extreme age and infirmity are issues. However, it is important that all members are actively asking consumers if they are happy to be contacted by BMG Research, as without this evidence we cannot improve the service we provide or measure the effectiveness of the programme.

If you are having difficulties obtaining consent from consumers or would like to discuss this further please get in touch via besn@decc.gsi.gov.uk.

Secretary of State Visit

On Friday 22 January, Energy Secretary Amber Rudd visited the East End Citizens Advice Bureau in Hackney Central to meet staff and volunteers as well as clients who have received help and advice on energy issues. The East End Citizens Advice Bureau is a Big Energy Saving Network member which serves local communities in the Boroughs of Hackney, Newham and Tower Hamlets. This was a great opportunityto showcase to the Secretary of State the great work of network members and how you are supporting consumers. East End Citizens Advice Bureau were successful at securing three energy champions this year.

Your work is making a real difference to consumers and this has been noticed.

Energy Secretary Amber Rudd said:

“It was great to meet the hardworking staff and volunteers at the East End Citizens Advice Bureau and have the opportunity to hear from some of the local people who have received help and support.

“There are a range of services on offer and thanks to funding from the Government’s Big Energy Saving Network, the East End Citizens Advice Bureau is helping communities in Hackney, Newham and Tower Hamlets save money on energy bills and keep their homes warm.”

Yasmin Alam, CEO, East End Citizens Advice Bureau said:

‘We’re delighted to welcome Amber Rudd, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, to East End Citizens Advice Bureau today. We’ve had the opportunity to celebrate our energy advice work with the Big Energy Savings Network, helping people to save money and energy.

“We look forward to continuing support for energy advice, embedding this into our wider advice work – for every £1 invested in energy advice we generate £5 for our service users.’

We would like to thank East End Citizens Advice for their continued hard work and making this visit fantastic.
